Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Kudremukh National Park

Karnataka’s rich flora and fauna are famous across India. Tourists visit the state all your round to spend time in nature’s peace and rejuvenate.

Here are two of the most serene and scenic places in Karnataka-

  • Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary

    – Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most visited tourist destinations with home stay in Chikmagalur. Located about 80 kilometres from the town, the wildlife sanctuary spans over an area of 492 sq. kilometres. It gets its name for the river Bhadra that forms the western boundary of the sanctuary.

The enclosure is home to many endangered species of plants and animals including leopards, black panthers, tigers, gaurs, chital deer etc. The other animals that can be seen in the enclosure include elephants, sambhar deer, spotted deer, sloth bears etc. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary also houses more than 300 species of birds including some endemic and endangered bird species, along with many migratory birds. This is why Bhadra is a paradise for bird watchers. The river also holds diverse aquatic species.

The perimeter of the wildlife sanctuary is surrounded by the hill ranges of the Western Ghats including Hebbegiri, Baba Budangiri and Mullayanagiri; which is the highest mountain peak in Karnataka.

At Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, the visitors can enjoy adventure activities like river rafting, kayaking along with the thrilling jungle safari.

  • Kudremukh National Park

    – The national park gets its name from Kudremukh mountain located in the park, which is the third highest point in Karnataka with a height of 1,894 m above sea level. The word “Kudremukh” means “horse-faced” in the native language, given to the mountain due to its shape. This national park is home to some of Karnataka’s endemic amphibian species. The fauna in the national park includes shy predators like tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and more common animals like spotted deer, sloth bears, lion-tailed macaques and giant flying squirrels.

The safari trail through the park passes by many waterfalls and natural pools that are sights to behold.

From the national park, tourists can set out on a trek to Kudremukh peak. The tickets for the trek are available at the ticket office.

The best time to visit these parks is from October to March, when the forest is green and at its full glory. However, if you want to spot animals, the best time to visit is the summer season when animals come out of their hiding to drink water at the waterholes or pools.
